Hollow-Cathode Lamps

Physicists and chemists rely on hollow cathode lamps (HCL) for atomic absorption and other applications. Structure of a Hollow-Cathode Lamp

While there are variations between different models of hollow cathode lamps, they all share the same basic structure:

  • Cathode: The cathode contains the element of interest

  • Anode: The anode contains the required potential for striking the discharge.

  • Gas Fill: An inert, noble gas is used for the filler gas, typically neon or argon.

  • Glass Tube: The glass envelope, made from either quartz or borosilicate, allows you to view spectral lines of interest

A high-quality hollow cathode lamp will generate a spectral emission line from the element with enough purity and intensity to create a linear calibration graph with minimal noise.

Depending on your application and instrument, there are hollow cathode lamps available with the following different options:

  • Diameter: 37 mm/1.5”, 2”

  • Coded or uncoded

  • Single element or multi-element

  • Connector: 2 pin, 4 pin, 7 pin

How to Obtain Optimal Performance for Your HCL

In order to make sure that you get the most out of your hollow cathode lamp, you want to ensure that you are following best practices for their use. Green Scientific has a data sheet for their products to prolong the life of your lamp. The sheet lists their products along with some of the most common models of AAS equipment so that you can use your lamp at the optimal current for your instrument.

They recommend starting on a lower run current and increasing it by one mA at a time until the peak energy is found. It is important to note that running the lamp on a lower current will help to extend its lifespan.
